Cinema wouldn’t be what it is today without the ingenuity and imagination of George Melies the pioneer of cinema special effects. His groundbreaking works of adventure, sci-fi, fantasy and illusion produced at the emergence of the silent film era of the 1900’s, astonished audiences then and his genius still captivates imaginations today.
Embark on a fanciful journey as four local musicians reveal their anticipated scores to a selection of short magical movies. Steve Callan, Petro Virous, Merle Fishwick and Ivan Gian-Piero, are all seasoned performers, writers and producers who’ve teamed up to each compose new soundtracks to deliver an audio feast streamed via headsets inside an immersive cinema installed in a 115-year-old theatre.
Honorary university film lecturer George Karpathakis introduces the life, films and techniques of this remarkably resourceful man who laid the foundations for the film industry and cinema as we know them today.
Plus a Q&A session afterwards discussing the composer’s insights into their individual journeys of scoring these films and coordinating online.
A treat for the eyes and ears as you marvel and wonder at the most mystical places and peculiar people you’ll meet along the way.
Thanks to the Town of Victoria Park for making this fantasy come alive.
