Western Australian Screen Fund

A Western Australian State Government Royalties for Regions funding initiative, provided through the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries

The Western Australian Screen Fund (WASF) provides Production Funding that encourages regional film industry activity, builds local capacity, and contributes to the liveability and vibrancy of regional Western Australian Communities.

All projects must provide COVID-19 Risk Mitigation Plans, that are expected to be in line with the Australian Screen Production Industry COVID-Safe Guidelines, and that comply with applicable State and Federal Covid Legislation.

WASF provides funding through two stages:

  • Stage 1: Regional Scouting and Community Liaison Assistance (Stage 1 up to $10,000 AUD)
  • Stage 2: Production Funding (up to a maximum of $2,000,000)

All productions that receive Screenwest production funding over $100,000 are required to budget for and engage a Western Australian attachment through the Crew Attachment Program in consultation with Screenwest.

Western Australian Post, Digital and Visual Effects Rebate

A Western Australian State Government Royalties for Regions funding initiative, provided through the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries

The Western Australian Post, Digital and Visual Effects (WA PDV) Rebate is a Western Australian post-production, digital and visual effects sector incentive that compliments the Australian Federal Government’s Australian Screen Production Incentive Producer Offset, Location Offset and PDV Offset streams.

Eligible applicants may apply for a discretionary rebate equivalent to 20% rebate for the first $500,000 AUD of expenditure (up to $100,000 AUD) and an additional 10% rebate for all expenditure over $500,000 AUD.

Unreal Engine Short Film Challenge

Applications are now closed.

Epic Games, VicScreen, Screen NSW, Screen Canberra, Screen Tasmania, South Australian Film Corporation, Screenwest, Screen Queensland and the Te Tumu Whakaata Taonga New Zealand Film Commission (NZFC) have partnered on an ANZ initiative, to provide funding towards the production of animated short films that utilise Unreal Engine 5 software.

Epic Games and Screenwest are looking for new voices and talent from across the film, television and games sectors and creators eager to engage with new, innovative technologies and alternate methods of storytelling.

Western Australian content creators can apply for up to $50,000 in production funding to create an animated short film of up to five minutes using Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 5 software.

Epic Games will offer a series of free training sessions to any Australians interested in learning about Unreal Engine 5 from 11 April to 29 April 2022. Potential applicants are strongly encouraged to participate. Further details can be found here.

The application process will be as follows:

30 March – Applications open
11 – 29 April – 3 weeks FREE Unreal Engine online training for real-time animation
9 May – Submission deadline
June – Finalists announced
July/August – One finalist per state receives $50,000 to create their short film over 8 weeks

Documentary Production Funding provides support to Western Australian Producers with distinctive, high quality and diverse projects with strong Western Australian outcomes.

All projects must provide COVID-19 Risk Mitigation Plans, that are expected to be in line with the Australian Screen Production Industry COVID-Safe Guidelines, and that comply with applicable State and Federal Covid Legislation.

The fund provides production finance for feature length documentary films and factual series with significant marketplace attachments from traditional and online platforms and distributors.

All productions that receive Screenwest production funding over $100,000 are required to budget for and engage a Western Australian attachment through the Crew Attachment Program in consultation with Screenwest.

Footloose Production Funding provides production funding to secure high profile, market driven, local, national and international footloose, scripted screen productions to Western Australia to showcase local stories, locations and/or culture to an international audience and to assist in the development of the Western Australian screen sector.

West Coast Visions

Applications are now closed.

Screenwest’s West Coast Visions initiative is a screen industry development program that provides production funding of $750,000 to low budget features that are to be produced in Western Australia. Its primary goal is to offer first time feature film directors their first theatrical feature film credit.

The initiative is designed to uncover, inspire and develop talented and motivated writer/director/producer teams with distinctive visions, assisting them to fulfill their professional potential.
