The week-long PRIDE Queer Film Festival showcases more than 50 films with 9 screenings, at The Backlot Perth. And, for the first time in 2021, the Festival is adding a full day Masterclass event with support from Screenwest and Lotterywest.
The new Masterclass will host a mix of acclaimed in-person and zoom speakers, with a live audience of emerging filmmakers.
The sessions aim to cover not only the structure of filmmaking and queer content, but also topics such as authenticity, who’s voice, and where is next for queer community storytellers.
The Festival has engaged a high calibre of speakers who will be a part of this inaugural event, with:
- John Sheedy – a multi award winning Australian director, whose work has been staged extensively throughout Australia. John has directed productions for Belvoir Street Theatre, Bell Shakespeare, Black Swan State Theatre Company, Sydney Opera House, Sydney Theatre Company and Opera Australia. John’s first short film Mrs McCutcheon had its Australian premiere at the Melbourne International Film Festival in 2017, winning best Australian Short Film. To date Mrs McCutcheon has travelled to more than 140 festivals, winning 45 awards. “H is for Happiness” John’s first feature film released in 2019, was nominated for 10 AACTA awards and had its international premiere at the Berlin International Film Festival.
- Erin Good – an award-winning writer and director, whose digital series Jade of Death, has amassed over 3.5million views online. This series sold out its screening at Sydney’s Mardi Gras Film Festival, where it was runner up for the Audience Choice Award. Worldwide the series has been nominated for over 60 awards.
- Adam Noviello – a musical theatre actor, writer and producer known for Spencer, the Water Stinger and Runway. Spencer was the opening night film at the 2020 PRIDE Queer Film Festival and made its international premiere at the New York City’s ‘My True Colours’ Festival in 2020.
