Role: Art Department Attachment
Dates: Monday, 9 October – Friday, 17 November 2023 (six weeks)
Location: Perth & Wheatbelt region
The successful candidate will complete six consecutive weeks as a paid Art Department Attachment under the expert guidance of the Art Director Danielle Fernandes, where they will:
- Observe the art department in the design process, with particular attention to set dressing, prop sourcing, prop making and crafting for graphics.
- Gain an insight into the design and set build process, guided by the Art Director.
- Gain an understanding of the art department and requirements for an Australian feature film.
- Develop an understanding of how the art department interacts with other departments, and how the departments collaborate to bring together a film.
- Assist the set decorating team with dressing locations, while developing an understanding of how the dressing of a set space works.
- Assist the props team with breaking down small props. For example, preparing fake office folders and notebooks with filler to make them look used.
- Help the graphics team with small crafting duties – sticking labels on products, writing up fake notice board signs, colouring or crafting kids props.
- Learn how to read call sheets, schedules and scripts.
- Develop an understanding of on-set and off-set protocols, and job roles within the departments.
- Assist the coordinator with online research to source props and dressing, if required.
- Develop relationships with the local art department for future opportunities.
Some travel to regional WA may be required. The production will provide accommodation, per diems and travel costs if travel is required.
WA First Nations practitioners and WA practitioners from historically underrepresented groups are encouraged to apply.
If the right candidate cannot be found for this role, the attachment may be offered in another department.
Key Responsibilities and Requirements
In addition to the requirements in the Screenwest Crew Attachment Guidelines and Terms of Trade, the successful applicant will possess:
- A demonstrated genuine interest in art department and design.
- A basic understanding of how a film is structured from pre-production, shoot and post-production.
- A basic knowledge of film production departments.
Please note: some manual labour is required.
Special consideration will be given to applicants from regional WA.
