Production, planning, policy, progress!

This quarter has seen the election commitment for a $100 million film studio for WA, local drama production progress considerably – with busy crews, amazing new content created, and significant planning and policy work being undertaken to best position the WA sector into the future.

In this quarter, Screenwest:

• Launched a new 2021-24 Strategic Plan with which Screenwest will lead, promote, support and grow the screen industry in Western Australia. You can download a copy here.
  
• Worked closely with the other Australian State Agencies to discuss a formal response to the Federal Government’s Media Reform Green Paper. Screenwest will work with the IAG to develop a submission to behalf of the WA Screen Industry.
• Worked on a proposed framework for the election commitment of a $20million Production Attraction Fund with the State Government Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries. More details will be released to the WA Screen Industry as soon as they are available.
• Consulted and finalised the diversity and inclusion framework and guide to assist the organisation and industry to ensure our strategies align with current trends, and to diversify representation of screen practitioners on and off screen. We will release this framework during the next quarter.
• Continued the development of a Reconciliation Action Plan and new Indigenous Screen Strategy. Further consultation with our Indigenous screen sector will take place over the next quarter, prior to release.
• Undertook consultation with members of the local games sector to inform a comprehensive funding submission for a Games and Interactive fund.
• Supported three Festivals through our Audience Community and Engagement program, WA Made Festival, PRIDE Queer Film Festival and the Flickerfest WA Regional Tour, platforms which showcased WA screen content to new audiences.
• Supported three crew attachment opportunities for upcoming projects, which will assist the development of practitioners to take the next steps in their careers.

With 2021 looking to be a significant year for Western Australian, and indeed Australian production, Screenwest looks forward to sharing some exceptionally exciting news which will set the foundations to support and grow the WA Screen Industry into the future.
