‘Walking Man’ premieres on ABC and iview 10 August
The fascinating story of the late 'Walking Man', Ross Seaton - a prolific artist, hidden in plain sight, whose work shines a light on the concept of making art just for art’s sake. Directed by Luna Laure, produced by VAM Media and told through the lens of Professor Ted Snell, this WA documentary is set to stun audiences.
Screenwest is pleased to announce that half-hour documentary, Walking Man, is set to make its television premiere on ABC TV Plus and iview next Wednesday, 10 August.
Walking Man tells the remarkable tale of unknown artist and ‘walking man’ Ross Seaton, an ever-present figure on the suburban streets of Perth, often seen pushing his wheelbarrow or pram along the busy Stirling Highway over many decades. The local community, fascinated by his comings and goings, mused over his intentions. But no one had it right.
Ross’s story is told through the lens of Professor Ted Snell, as he sorts through thousands of artworks and collected items hoarded and stockpiled in every room of Ross’ home to bring together an eclectic exhibition set to stun the local Arts community and beyond. The Walking Man was a prolific artist, hidden in plain sight, whose work shines a light on the concept of making art just for art’s sake.
Walking Man is directed by filmmaker Luna Laure in her first half-hour documentary directing credit. The film is executive produced by Brendan Hutchens of VAM Media (Roger Swainston Drawn to Water, Shipwreck Hunters Australia), with Jim Frater ACS as director of photography, Frances Elliott serving as editor and Rose Grandile-Pizzi line producing.
“The story of Perth’s Walking Man is truly extraordinary. It’s been a fascinating journey, attempting to capture his spirit and ethos, while following the unfolding story. The process of making the film has been one of creative experimentation, encouraged by all who collaborated with me and by the support from VAM Media, ABC and Screenwest. I’ve loved playing with form and visual storytelling to honour the story of this iconic Perth figure.” said Luna Laure, Walking Man Director.
“Walking Man is an electric experience beautifully told by Luna, Ted and the VAM team. It holds up a mirror to not only reflect the mysterious life of a talent but also to the process of creativity itself and the very human impulse to make, to build, to paint. At its heart this is a detective story well told that reveals the personal life of a previously unknown artistic genius who lived life as an enigma.” said Leo Faber, ABC Executive Producer: Factual & Culture.
“From the streets of Perth to a triumphant public exhibition, the filmmaking team have managed to capture a compelling journey of discovery into Ross Seaton’s hidden life, and how he made sense of the world through art. Walking Man is a moving tribute to a renowned local enigma here in Western Australia.” said Paul Williams, Screenwest Documentary Executive.
Walking Man will screen on ABC TV Plus at 7:30pm next Wednesday, 10 August as part of ABC Arts Week. It will also be available to stream on ABC iview.
Walking Man is a VAM Media production for ABC with principal production investment from Screenwest and Lotterywest.
