WA Screen Industry Shines with Six Nominations and Two Wins at the Western Australian of the Year Awards

Two members of the Western Australian Screen Industry, Julia Redwood and Karla Hart were awarded Western Australian of the year awards on Friday, 5 June 2021.
Remarkably the Western Australia screen industry had 6 nominees in the running for Western Australian of the Year Awards categories, including Arts and Culture Nominees Kylie Bracknell (I Met a Girl), Leon Pericles (Storm in a Teacup) and Julia Hale (Different Lens), and Youth Award nominee Sukhjit Kaur Khalsa (What Would Suki Do?), in addition to the Business Award which was won by Julia Redwood and Aboriginal Award won by Karla Hart.
Presented in celebration of excellence and outstanding ethics in business leadership, social entrepreneurship or innovation at a state, national or international level, resulting in positive social or economic impact in WA, the Business Award was presented to Julia Redwood of Prospero Productions. Redwood said, “I am hugely honoured to be named as the business winner of the West Australian of the year Awards! It’s a fantastic testament to how important the screen industry is to both culture and the economy of WA!”
Karla Hart was the winner of the Western Australian of the Year Aboriginal Award which was presented in celebration of excellence in professional and/or personal achievements at a state, national or international level, contributing to the Western Australian community and recognition as an inspirational role model in the Aboriginal Community.
Rikki Lea Bestall CEO of Screenwest congratulated the winners, stating, “This is an incredible achievement for two outstanding women from the local screen industry. These awards acknowledge decades of significant contribution to the sector in WA. It’s such a privilege to champion incredible screen content alongside these formidable West Australian screen practitioners and I congratulate the four other incredible screen industry professionals nominated.”
