‘The Hospital: In the Deep End’ greenlit for production for SBS
Australian television personalities Melissa Leong, Costa Georgiadis and Samuel Johnson go behind the scenes at one of Australia’s busiest public hospitals in WA production company Smashing Films' three-part series.
Screenwest is pleased to announce that Smashing Films’ documentary series The Hospital: In the Deep End has been greenlit for production by SBS, Screen Australia, Screenwest and Lotterywest.
The three-part series explores the challenges facing the Australian public health system by going behind the scenes at one of Australia’s busiest public hospitals – St Vincent’s, Sydney. For one week, three well-known Australians, Dessert Masters presenter and journalist, Melissa Leong; actor and philanthropist, Samuel Johnson; and Gardening Australia presenter, Costa Georgiadis will work alongside staff as they deliver frontline care, experiencing what it really takes to work in public healthcare in Australia today.
The series is the first project from new WA production company, Smashing Films, founded by international award-winning Executive Producer and Creative Director, Dan Brown. Under production company Joined Up Films, Dan executive produced a number of WA documentary projects including Keeping Hope for NITV, Me and My Tourette’s, What Does Australia Really Think About… and The Truth About Anxiety with Celia Pacquola for SBS.
In addition to Dan, the creative team includes Writer, Director and Series Producer, Anthony Barwell (What Does Australia Really Think About…), with Jo Siddiqui serving as Supervising Producer.
“This has been an incredible series to be a part of. We assembled a world class production team and a cast who gave so much of themselves to make this series so powerful. St Vincent’s Hospital were so trusting and welcoming, and we wanted to repay that trust by making a worthy series. We are very grateful to SBS for commissioning the show and Screenwest and Screen Australia for their support.” said Dan Brown, The Hospital: In the Deep End Executive Producer.
“SBS is an industry leader in original documentaries that shine a light on stories of major national importance and can drive real meaningful impact. We’re thrilled to be working with Smashing Films to highlight the extraordinary challenges facing staff right across the medical frontline in The Hospital: In the Deep End.” said Bethan Arwel-Lewis, SBS Commissioning Editor.
“We’re so pleased to support Dan and his team as they produce their first documentary project under the Smashing Films banner. The Hospital: In the Deep End gives an eye-opening insight into the tireless efforts of Australia’s healthcare workers, and we look forward to seeing it on our screens next year.” said Melissa Hayward, Screenwest Documentary Executive.
The Hospital: In the Deep End will premiere on SBS and SBS on Demand in 2024.
