Following the Emerging Sector Review in January, Screenwest announced a number of recommendations which the Screenwest Board and Industry Advisory Group (IAG) endorsed in May including an ongoing commitment to developing and delivering screen production opportunities.
Screenwest appointed Eva Di Blasio as Talent Development Manager last month to assist the organisation deliver on the recommendations and she’s now rolling out the first of a number of development opportunities and screen production initiatives.
In her role, Eva will continue to oversee call outs for attachments, mentorships, Professional in Residence and travel support programs.
Announcing the latest opportunities, Screenwest Interim CEO Willie Rowe said he was thrilled to see the organisation delivering on recommendations from the Emerging Sector Review.
“It’s really pleasing to see Screenwest provide meaningful opportunities to early and mid career practitioners,” Mr Rowe said.
“Screenwest is delivering on its promised industry commitments to recognise and develop talent here in WA.”
Executive Producer – Expressions of Interest
Screenwest is seeking expressions of interest from Western Australian producers, production companies or organisations to oversee projects to be produced through Screenwest’s 2018-19 Elevate and Generate Initiatives.
Screenwest will select a successful applicant to act in the role of Executive Producer through the production and delivery of up to eight (8) scripted short films or web series.
Expressions of interest must be received by close Monday, 3 December 2018.
Please refer to the listed guidelines for more details.
Screenwest’s Elevate & Generate initiatives provide support for the development and production of scripted short films and web series.
Both are designed to develop creative and technical filmmaking skills as well as provide a calling-card for early to mid-career Western Australian filmmakers.
Elevate Initiative
Elevate is multi-phased, involving high-level script and project development prior to moving into production.
The program consists of two strands, Elevate30 and Elevate70, both of which have a diversity element again highlighting Screenwest’s commitment to its Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Plan and ensuring access opportunities to all WA practitioners.
In line with Screenwest’s Indigenous Screen Strategy 2016 – 2020, and Screenwest’s Diversity Equity Inclusion Plan 2018-2019 each Elevate strand will support at least one project with an Indigenous director and at least one project with a key creative (writer/director/producer) who identifies as CALD, LGBTQIA+ or as having a Disability.
Emerging filmmaker teams (producer, director, writer) will apply directly to Screenwest.
The selected Executive Producer will participate in the selection of the projects and be involved in the contracting and development process with each of the successful projects. They will also be responsible for overseeing the delivery of the productions.
ELEVATE30 is available for filmmakers that have completed at least one quality short-form project and is for projects from 5-10mins in duration. Up to $30,000 is available through this strand.
ELEVATE70 is available for more advanced filmmakers with a solid track-record in short-form filmmaking (or equivalent). Elevate70 is intended for projects between 10-15 minutes in duration and up to $70,000 is available for these productions.
Please refer to the listed guidelines for more details.
Generate Initiative
Generate is a skills development program providing support for early-career Western Australian filmmakers to make imaginative drama, comedy and animated short films or web series pilots. The objective of Generate is to give talented new-comers to the screen industry, or new-comers to directing, a chance to take their skills to the next level.
In 2018-19, two short films of 5 to 10 minutes in length each will be funded.
Submissions for Screenwest’s Elevate & Generate initiatives close Monday, 14 January 2019.
Please refer to the guidelines for more details on this initiative.
