Screenwest to roll out The Everyone Project in January 2023
The Everyone Project is an industry-wide initiative to measure diversity and the inclusion of historically under-represented and excluded voices and filmmakers in Australian film and TV production, with Screenwest rolling out the project across production funding from January 2023.
The Everyone Project is an industry-wide initiative to measure diversity and the inclusion of historically under-represented and excluded voices and filmmakers in Australian film and TV production, with Screenwest rolling out the project across production funding from January 2023.
Led by the Screen Diversity and Inclusion Network (SDIN) and developed with significant industry consultation, The Everyone Project aims to measure the demographic diversity of the Australian film and TV casts and crews, by allowing screen productions and crew to register and complete a demographic survey.
Screenwest recognises the significant economic and cultural benefits of diverse representation, stories, and voices. There is also strong evidence to show a diverse and inclusive screen industry is more innovative, resilient, and effective, as well as representative and reflective of our communities and audiences.
Like other funding agencies as well as broadcasters, from January 2023, Screenwest will require production companies and producers to register their Screenwest funded projects with The Everyone Project. Screenwest will use the data to benchmark and track current diversity of representation and inform strategies to improve representation in front of and behind the camera. The Everyone Project will complement Screenwest’s existing data gathering capabilities through SmartyGrants, our funding portal.
How the process works:
- Producers will register their project on The Everyone Project website and receive an email confirmation of their registration.
- Producers will then forward this email to Screenwest.
- Producers will seek consent from cast and crew to pass their details to The Everyone Project, and then submit the list of those who provided consent to The Everyone Project’s central, anonymised database.
- The Everyone Project will send a link to cast and crew to fill in a confidential diversity survey to a central, anonymous database managed by The Everyone Project. Screenwest will not be able to see this personal data and will only receive annual de-identified aggregated reports which show diversity on Screenwest funded productions as a whole across this period.
- Once an individual cast or crew member’s data is recorded this creates an individual record, so this data will not need to be provided again for future productions unless it needs updating.
SDIN’s inaugural Everyone Project survey attracted responses from 2,811 cast and crew across 70 TV and film productions completed in 2021–22. Industry participation in year one was encouraging, with a response rate of more than 40% of cast and crew on registered productions completing the survey. Preliminary results from this inaugural survey have been captured in Everyone Counts: Preliminary data on diversity in the Australian screen industry from The Everyone Project, and can be viewed here.
