Screenwest Celebrates Strong Foundations of Cultural Programming as it Concludes its Tenure as Yagan Square Digital Tower Programmer.
Screenwest will conclude its agreement with DevelopmentWA to provide programming services for the Yagan Square Digital Tower as of 30 November 2020.
Screenwest was awarded the tender for programming the iconic piece of Perth infrastructure back in 2018 and worked closely with DevelopmentWA (then MRA) to develop efficient programming processes. During the time of programming the dedicated team of staff established the strong foundations of high-quality cultural and community programming for the screen.
Screenwest is incredibly proud of the partnerships it has nurtured and the content it has presented during its time as the Digital Tower Programmer. The Screenwest team worked directly with artists, community groups, arts and cultural organisations and Institutions to showcase exhibitions, livestream performances and present short films and screen content from all over Western Australia, including regional areas.
“We would like to sincerely thank DevelopmentWA and the State Government of Western Australia for their support, in what has been a significant partnership for the organisation,” said Willie Rowe, CEO of Screenwest.
He explained, “Cultural programming on the tower has been a key driver for visitation to the precinct and is has been a great pleasure to set the benchmark for this programming into the future. We hope to see it continue in the capable hands of the Western Australian State Government, with arts, cultural and community projects showcased within the heart of the city.”
Some noteworthy projects delivered by the Screenwest team include:
- 2020 – NAIDOC Week Celebrations.
- 2020 – Screen Genie project with Sam Longley to drive visitation to the Yagan Square retailers and celebration of Father’s Day.
- 2020 – RPH Unsung Heroes of Medial Research Project – promoting medical research through the Royal Perth Hospital Medical Research Foundation.
- 2020 – A Day in My Life. Short films commissioned by local filmmakers and artists to document a day in their life during the COVID-19 lockdown.
- 2020 – Western Australian Women’s Hall of Fame Exhibition and short factual film to celebrate International Women’s Day.
- 2019 – Scary at the Square Halloween Event, delivered in partnership with the US Consulate and DevelopmentWA
- 2019 – Premiere of Djinda Djinda Kanangoor (Twinkle Twinkle Little Star) through the Noongar Lullabies project in partnership with Community Arts Network.
In addition, Screenwest was instrumental in programming screen presentations for a number of State Government and department announcements, most recently the announcement of the Edith Cowan University redevelopment at Yagan Square.
This incredible opportunity for Screenwest to benchmark cultural programming for the space is one the organisation will remember fondly, however strategic priorities for Screenwest now require it to focus resources on the growth and sustainability of the Western Australian Screen Industry.
