This industry event on Monday, 10 December 2018 is open to members of the West Australian film industry who have projects in development or ready to pitch and are seeking creative partners.
The format of the evening will be structured and un-structured meeting, mixing and mingling. The goal is to connect people at both ends of the “project continuum”: those with projects and those looking for projects.
The event will run in two parts:
Meetings

Time: 5:00pm – 7:00pm
Location: Claremont Football Club Function Room, 3 Davies Road, Claremont WA 6010
10-minute pitch sessions in which selected practitioners can present their projects to interested directors, producers and other industry professionals in one-on-one meetings (applications closed).
Mixing and Mingling
Date: Monday, 10 December 2018
Time: 7:00pm – 10:00pm
Location: Claremont Football Club Function Room, 3 Davies Road, Claremont WA 6010
Unstructured mixing and mingling for more discussion and an opportunity for anyone who didn’t get to participate in the pitch sessions to present and discuss projects. View the event on Facebook.
Hybrid Documentary Workshop
The Hybrid Documentary Workshop is a half-day workshop at Edith Cowan University (ECU) with Gabrielle Brady, including travel and accommodation to WA.
AIDC is offering Perth Screen Collective the opportunity to co-host with ECU an on-site half-day workshop with Gabrielle Brady in Perth.
This workshop aims to provide practitioners with the opportunity to further develop their understanding of hybrid storytelling techniques and to workshop ways in which they can draw on these techniques in existing or new projects.
This is an opportunity to draw on Gabrielle’s knowledge and experience to further develop practitioners’ understandings of different approaches to the documentary form to create new and intriguing ways of expression.
During the workshop, she will guide participants through different hybrid techniques including:
- Reconstruction
- Performance
- Observational storytelling
- Animation
- Sound design, and
- Editing
Participants can develop and explore a concept for an existing or new project where hybrid approaches might best suit their projects, for example if:
- the identity of a subject cannot be revealed
- the subject is no longer living
- an event being represented has passed, or
- the content lends itself to a more poetic or experimental treatment.
Gabrielle will then work with the participants, or groups of participants, to discuss different creative ways to communicate these ideas through hybrid forms.
The Business of Directing
A two-day workshop for emerging directors, professional directors, and those who need to know the nuts and bolts of the directing business. This workshop outlines legal issues and practical knowledge about filming to help those new to the game and those who need to be up-to-date on current issues and systems.
The workshop will cover contracts, director’s royalties, casting, superannuation, legal issues, insurance, relationships with producers and heads of department, individual funding, international directing and moral rights. Industry professionals will lead the workshop from each of these areas.
Writers Toolkit
A two-day intensive workshop will provide hands-on, practical instruction on a range of activities and professional requirements for working writers in Australia.
These include:
- contracting and AWG industrial agreements
- working with Screenrights and collecting agencies
- copyright and current legislation
- using Final Draft from first draft to locked pages
- changes in digital, broadcast and theatrical screen state-of-play and how they affect screenwriters.
This workshop is ideal for experienced industry practitioners who need updated information on a changing screen industry landscape, as well as beginners and emerging professionals.
Feature Film Boot Camp (The Second Draft… And Beyond!)
Under the guidance of an experienced feature film writer and script editor (Barbara Connell), 3 selected teams (writer/director/producer) will work individually (as teams) and collectively (with other teams within workshop context) to rewrite an already existing screenplay.
The boot camp is ideal for experienced industry practitioners or emerging teams that hope to apply for West Coast Visions and other feature script incentives.
Writing & Directing VR Content
An experienced VR Content Creator will discuss strategies, challenges and approaches to writing and directing VR content.
Filmmaking in VR is different not just because of the content or the experience, but also because of the process. The fundamental basis of writing, filming, creating effects, and working with sound needs to shift to be viewer-centric.
At every stage, the writer and director have to ask what the viewer is doing, seeing, feeling and thinking and create the work in response to that. Also, there is no ‘behind the camera’. The set is all around, creating new challenges and opportunities for the writer, director and crew.
Western Australian Stories
This meet-and-match event (with presentations) is designed to connect WA screenwriters and directors/producers with WA authors, documentarians, publishers and members of Writing WA to source a broader variety of materials for possible adaptation.
The event will be managed by Screenwriters WA in coordination with Writing WA and Fremantle Press. The event will invite a broad cross-section of practitioners, combining formal presentations with social networking.
