‘Our Law Series Two’ greenlit for production by NITV
Produced by PiNK PEPPER and Periscope Pictures, series two of Our Law expands nationwide with unparalleled access to the Western Australian Police and now new access to other Australian police jurisdictions.
Screenwest is pleased to announce that Series Two of Western Australian documentary Our Law has been greenlit for production by NITV.
An 8 x 30-min series, Our Law Series Two will continue to provide intimate and candid access to First Nations police officers, recruits, and cadets as they attempt to break the cycle of Indigenous incarceration and repair deeply troubled Aboriginal-police relationships, while giving a rightful voice to the First Nations communities being policed.
Following on from the success of series one, and the preceding half-hour standalone, Our Law’s second season expands nationwide with unparalleled access to the Western Australian Police and now new access to other Australian police jurisdictions, including Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland and the Torres Strait.
Our Law Series Two sees the creative team behind series one returning, including director Perun Bonser (Star Dreaming, Noongar Footy Magic), and producers Taryne Laffar (KGB, On Country Kitchen) and Sam Bodhi Field (Behind the Blue Line, Virtual Whadjuk). Series One premiered on NITV and SBS in January as part of NITV’s celebratory summer lineup of First Nations programming, with the broadcaster marking 10 years since first launching on free-to-air television.
“My Co-Producer Sam Bodhi Field and myself are extremely grateful to NITV, Screenwest and Screen Australia for their ongoing investment support for Our Law Series Two! We would also like to thank the Western Australian Police Force for their continued access and to the Queensland, Victoria and New South Wales Police Forces for allowing us to include their First Nations officers and community liaisons in Our Law Series Two. Lastly, to all of the First Nations officers and communities that we are observing in this second series, A HUGE THANK YOU – this is for you and all First Nations peoples around Australia.” said Taryne (Pinky) Laffar, Our Law Series Two Producer.
“We’re so proud to be furthering our support for PiNK PEPPER and Periscope Pictures, with the project beginning as a groundbreaking half-hour documentary and now growing into two full series for NITV. Our Law delves into the relationship between First Nations communities and Australian police with candour and respect, encouraging deeper cultural understanding and healing. I look forward to seeing the series come to life.” said Devina McPherson, Screenwest Indigenous Executive.
“NITV’s commissioning of a second series speaks volumes of the filmmaking team’s abilities to navigate this complex subject and weave together the compelling journeys of First Nations police officers, recruits and cadets. With the locations and talent expanding across Australia, series two will no doubt resonate with audiences everywhere.” said Paul Williams, Screenwest Documentary Manager.
Filming has now kicked off across Western Australia, Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria.
All six episodes of Our Law Series One are available to stream via SBS on Demand here. Our Law, the half-hour documentary about Australia’s first Indigenous-run police station is also available to stream on SBS on Demand here.
