The much-anticipated outback noir series MYSTERY ROAD premiered on ABC TV on Sunday, 3 June. The full series is available to binge on ABC iView.
MYSTERY ROAD – THE SERIES
MYSTERY ROAD – THE SERIES bridges the gap between Ivan Sen’s feature film MYSTERY ROAD (2013) and its sequel GOLDSTONE (2016).
The six-part series sees Detective Jay Swan (Aaron Pedersen) investigate the mysterious disappearance of two young farm hands on an outback cattle station. One is a local Indigenous footy hero, and the other a backpacker.
Working together with local cop Emma James (Judy Davis), Jay’s investigation uncovers a past injustice that threatens the fabric of the whole community.
Check out this behind the scenes video of MYSTERY ROAD Director Rachel Perkins talking about the show.
Reception
The series has been highly praised by both critics and casual viewers. It’s movie length premiere rated 5th across all free to air channels in Australia.
The Australian premiere at Kununurra, one of the series filming main locations, reported record crowds with the biggest walk-in audience on record for the Kununurra Picture Gardens.
MYSTERY ROAD fans have been shouting the show’s praises on Twitter.

More Praise for MYSTERY ROAD
“Mystery Road is dripping with atmosphere.” – Sunday Mail Adelaide
“Director Rachel Perkins makes women in this outback crime more visible than ever. Rather than positioning the show’s female characters as victims or seductive forces, she assembles a strong core group of women who guide Jay and the series.” – Blake Howard, Junkee
“Mark Wareham’s cinematography assists in capturing a landscape that goes beyond merely an eye-catching backdrop. Filmed in the East Kimberley, the visual imagery gives the series a cinematic feel but it also gives the land such a strong presence that it feels like an antagonist in the story.” Larissa Behrendt, The Guardian
“This is an incredibly beautifully filmed piece of media. I mean, there are moments in my notes where I have just written ‘wow’.” – Brian MacNamara, TLDR Movie Reviews
MYSTERY ROAD – The Series is produced by Bunya Productions for the ABC with funding support from Screenwest, Screen Australia, the Western Australian Regional Film Fund supported by Royalties for Regions and Create NSW, produced in association with all3media International who will be handling the international sales.
