Internationally acclaimed English actress Miranda Richardson will join Sam Neill and Michael Caton in a unique reimagining of award-winning Icelandic film RAMS (HRÚTAR), currently shooting in Mt Barker in Western Australia’s Great Southern region.
With two Oscar nominations; multiple Olivier, BAFTA and Golden Globe nominations and awards; and a career spanning nearly four decades on stage and screen, Richardson earned her stripes in London’s West End before moving to television and film.
On the small screen, Richardson has attracted fans, admiration and awards with roles in BLACKADDER (1986-89), MERLIN (1998), PARADE’S END (2012), and ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS (1994-2004).
Her impressive list of film credits includes:
- Steven Spielberg’s EMPIRE OF THE SUN (1987)
- Tim Burton’s SLEEPY HOLLOW (1999)
- acclaimed performances in THE CRYING GAME (1992) and THE HOURS (2002), as well as CHICKEN RUN (2000), HARRY POTTER AND THE GOBLET OF FIRE (2005), THE YOUNG VICTORIA (2009), MADE IN DAGENHAM (2010) and STRONGER (2017).
In RAMS Richardson plays the role of Kat; the local veterinarian of a sheep farming town overcome by a rare ovine disease.
RAMS tells the story of two estranged brothers (played by Neill and Caton) who live on adjoining farms and who haven’t spoken to each other in 40 years. The brothers are forced to find a way to work together to save their flock and their family’s legacy when their sheep and their small town are threatened.
Director Jeremy Sims (LAST CAB TO DARWIN, BENEATH HILL 60) leads the flock in this fresh interpretation of the original film which promises to give a universal story a distinctly Australian context.
“I am completely thrilled that Ms Richardson is able to join us in telling our version of this beautiful Saga about warring brothers. I’ve been a fan forever, from ‘Queenie’ to STRONGER, and fought hard to bring her out here to play Kat and complement our awesome local cast. She is a world class performer whose presence will bring another dimension to our production.”
The film also stars:
- Asher Keddie (OFFSPRING, X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE, LOVE MY WAY)
- Wayne Blair (BLACK COMEDY, MYSTERY ROAD, and director of THE SAPPHIRES)
- Leon Ford (THE LETDOWN, THE LIGHT BETWEEN OCEANS)
- Travis McMahon (CACTUS, MISS FISHER’S MURDER MYSTERIES)
- Hayley McElhinney (THE BABADOOK, DOCTOR DOCTOR)
- Kipan Rothbury (SACRED HEART), and
- Perth-based newcomers, 17-year old Asher Yasbincek and WAAPA’s Will McNeill.
Four-legged cast members include two-year-old Dorset Horn ram, Locke, and one-year-old Poll Dorset ewe, Suzie, both of whom are fresh from shooting Foxtel’s LAMBS OF GOD.
RAMS has been adapted by Western Australian screenwriter Jules Duncan and produced by Janelle Landers and Aidan O’Bryan from WBMC.
RAMS has received major investment from Screen Australia, in association with Screenwest and the Western Australian Regional Film Fund.
Roadshow Films will distribute throughout Australia and New Zealand with worldwide sales being handled by UK-based WestEnd Films.
