Lotterywest provides additional support for the WA Screen Industry
Lotterywest has committed an additional $1 million in funding to Screenwest to support the Western Australian Screen Industry, bringing the total to $7.3 million in 2020-21.
These additional funds enable Screenwest to support screen projects within the state with development and production funding. An allocation of the Lotterywest funds will also be targeted to talent development, Indigenous funding programs, and diversity and inclusion initiatives to support Western Australian practitioners and projects that explore diverse WA stories.
The Government of Western Australia, through Lotterywest, supports Screenwest and the WA Screen Industry. Over the past 25 years, Lotterywest grants to Screenwest have totalled $125 million to support a range of local productions, helping to create jobs and build a brighter Western Australia.
Premier Mark McGowan spoke of the State Government’s ongoing commitment and the achievements through Screenwest support made during his address that the Opening of Perth Festival Lotterywest Films on Monday night that featured WA production The Furnace.
“The artistic influence of Perth Festival and Screenwest productions will play an important role in reinvigorating local arts and events sectors through investments and flow on benefits to people who work in the industry,” said McGowan.
Screenwest CEO Willie Rowe said, “The Western Australian screen industry is well placed to enter a vibrant period of production. We are working closely with the State Government through The Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries, and Lotterywest, as well as with the local industry to support and celebrate WA’s resilient sector into the future.
“We thank the State Government and Lotterywest for this additional funding and look forward to the impact it will have on our Industry and the productions we can support.”
This funding elevates the support already committed in 2020-21 by the State Government of Western Australia through the Western Australian Screen Fund, setting the WA Screen Industry up to attract a multitude of new productions, enabling new stories to be told and work for WA practitioners. This funding has been instrumental in expanding the local industry and attracting larger budget, interstate, and international productions to Western Australia.
