Joined Up Films selected to guide disability diverse series: Filming Our Future
Screenwest and Carers WA are pleased to announce that WA factual production company, Joined Up Films, will work with four disability diverse screen practitioners and a brilliant group of WA storytellers living with disability, to create new short documentary series, Filming Our Future: Our Choice, Our Voice, Our Way.
The initiative will explore the way sports and physical activities can drive inclusion and community cohesion.
Renowned for creating engaging documentary television for national broadcasters, Joined Up Films was selected through a competitive application process as the WA production company to oversee the initiative. Their previous work has included programs which interrogate the human experience and incorporate a strong social conscience, such as Bite Club, Secrets of Our Cities and Is Australia Racist?
“We are passionate about mentoring new, diverse talent to explore themes which can have great social impact. We see a huge opportunity to drive diversity within the screen industry and create a highly original series that is driven by the distinctive situations that our storytellers may be experiencing,” said Dan Brown, Creative Director of Joined Up Films.
Storytellers living with disability have been selected to shape one episode each of the 15-part documentary series. They will share how physical activity and inclusion in community sporting clubs have provided opportunities for them to forge friendships, improve their health and learn new skills in fun and supportive environments.
Paul Rogers, Business Development and Disability Services Manager of Carers WA said, “Following the success of the Different Lens screen project, Carers WA are once again excited to be working with Screenwest and now our new partner Joined Up Films on another fantastic undertaking. Working to bring diverse stories to the community and encourage positive change in culture and society, attitude and outlook is a passion for us at Carers WA and it is a privilege to be able to work alongside amazing, individual storytellers and talented practitioners”
As part of the initiative, four disability diverse practitioners will receive hands-on experience and guidance from WA Screen Industry professionals in writing and directing, camera operation, editing and sound recording.
Screenwest Diversity and Inclusion Manager, Dr. Jonathan Messer said, “Screenwest is excited to work with Joined Up Films and Carers WA once again to provide opportunities for disability diverse screen practitioners to receive one-on-one mentorship, on set experience and to showcase the stories of some amazing individuals.”
This initiative is made possible with the generous funding support of Screenwest key stakeholder, Lotterywest.
