Welcome to 2019 – I hope you’ve enjoyed a great start to the year.
I’m wrapping up my first week as ‘official’ CEO which included an interview with Business News where I got to speak candidly about my role, vision for the organisation and our plans to assist the local industry now and in the future.
Production-wise, DIRT MUSIC, H IS FOR HAPPINESS, and RAMS wrapped filming before Christmas with a number of crew and creatives gearing up, including West Coast Visions project BELOW and I MET A GIRL which head into production next week and VIRTUAL YAGAN VR starts production soon as well.
I’m also really excited about the growth in international appetite for WA-made content.
For example, MYSTERY ROAD and THE HEIGHTS have garnered significant audiences overseas with a second series of both possible to cater to demand in the UK. Two returning TV series will give our local industry the sustainable edge we’ve been looking for in recent years.
Documentaries are another popular international product and we’re currently seeing high demand for outback-related series from the European markets.
Moving forward we’ll be looking to expand our support of projects in other markets such as interactive, virtual reality and gaming. We understand not all investments in these technology-based markets will deliver a return, but in this sector a small investment can deliver a big return.
Screenwest is currently looking at how we can develop a model to invest in these kinds of areas without taking away from traditional screen projects.
It’s a brave new world but one we’re prepared for.
