Western Australian feature ‘Avarice’ hits Australian cinemas today
John V. Soto's action thriller will have audiences on the edge of their cinema seats when it hits the big screen today, with Perth-raised Gillian Alexy starring alongside Luke Ford and a talented cast of WA actors.
Screenwest is pleased to announce that Western Australian action thriller Avarice has hit Australian cinemas today, following the film’s Australian premiere at CinefestOZ earlier this year.
Perth-raised actor Gillian Alexy (Outsiders, The Americans, McLeod’s Daughters) stars as Kate, an Olympic level archer who attempts to rescue her investment banker husband after he is abducted by a team of mercenaries during a vicious home invasion.
Gillian leads a talented cast including Luke Ford (Animal Kingdom, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor), Alex Fleri (Sons of Summer) and Western Australians Alexandra Nell (Rattlesnake, Koko: A Red Dog Story), Ryan Panizza (The Gateway, Home and Away), Nick Atkinson (The Strip, Let’s Get Skase) and Tom O’Sullivan (Observance, The Reckoning).
Avarice is the fifth feature directed by Western Australian filmmaker John V. Soto (The Gateway, Needle), who describes the film as a fresh take on the home invasion sub-genre, with its genre plot elements such as the abduction and rescue effort combined with deeper themes of loyalty and family. John also produces with Maddfilms’ Tim Maddocks.
“Making a film is always difficult, but completing one during Covid was particularly tough. Fortunately with the support of Screenwest and our talented cast and crew we were able to create a movie that we believe audiences will enjoy.” said John V. Soto, Avarice Director.
Avarice was filmed entirely in Perth and the surrounding hills region, with a Western Australian crew including Heads of Department David Le May A.C.S. (Director of Photography), Lawrie Silvestrin A.S.E. (Editor), John Fairhead (1st Assistant Director), Monique Wajon (Production Designer) and Scott Montgomery (Sound Recordist).
“Avarice is an entertaining home grown thriller; we’re so pleased to see it hit the big screen today. The production provided invaluable employment and upskilling opportunities for Western Australian creatives and crew, contributing to the growth of our local screen sector.” said Rikki Lea Bestall, Screenwest CEO.
The international rights to Avarice have been sold by sales agent Epic Pictures to numerous distributors around the world including the United Kingdom, North America, Germany, Japan, South Korea and India.
Avarice is screening at select cinemas around Australia – details here.
