Virtual Reality Animated Series ‘Lustration VR’ greenlit for production
The groundbreaking VR series is being produced by a talented creative team including rising WA producer, Taryne Laffar of PiNK PEPPER.
Screenwest, together with Screen Australia and Screen NSW, is thrilled to announce that animated virtual reality series Lustration VR has been greenlit for production.
“We’re thrilled to support such a unique VR project – this series has exciting potential to take narrative drama to the next level, with its team proving to be dynamic and boundary-pushing storytellers. We look forward to seeing Lustration VR make (virtual) waves internationally.” said Tenille Kennedy, Screenwest Scripted Executive.
Lustration VR is a 4 x 6 minute virtual reality series written and directed by First Nations creative Ryan Griffen, based on his graphic novel series of the same name, published by WA-based publishing house Gestalt Comics. The series is set in The Between, a realm where the dead go to cleanse or ‘lustrate’ themselves before crossing over to pure happiness. When Malcolm slips into The Between, past the protectors who guard it, he puts everything there at risk.
The series is being produced by rising West Australian producer, Taryne Laffar of PiNK PEPPER (KGB, Our Law), alongside producer Carolina Sorensen (I’m Wanita) and executive producers, Nathan Anderson (Awake: Episode One), Wolfgang Bylsma (The Deep) and Griffen.
Serving as technical producer is Caitlin Lomax of INTR Studios, a Bunbury-based digital studio with a focus on AR, VR, Virtual Production and Motion Capture.
“PiNK PEPPER is proud to be working with Ryan Griffen on his vision for Lustration and with New Canvas and Gestalt Publishing on this exciting narrative animated VR experience! It is also very satisfying for PiNK PEPPER to be working with and supporting Western Australian creatives Emily K Smith and Wolfgang Bylsma of Gestalt Publishing. We are also very excited to announce the latest edition to the cast is WA’s own, Kelton Pell, playing the role of Malcolm.” said Taryne Laffar, Producer.
The four episodes will be written by Griffen and Nayuka Gorrie (Thalu). Each episode is told from a different character’s perspective and has the potential to be experienced from different vantage points, allowing the audience to build their own picture of the characters, the world and ultimately the story. The series will be created entirely in the VR painting and animation app, Quill, with industry leading artists Zoe Roellin and Lea Peirano onboard to help execute Griffen’s vision.
The cast features established and emerging talent including Kevin Conroy, who has provided the voice of Batman in the US animated series for the last 23 years and Wongatha/Yamatji and Noongar/Gtija woman Shakira Clanton (Eden, Preppers).
Lustration VR has been developed and produced by Screen Australia with the assistance of Screenwest and Lotterywest, and with support from Screen NSW.
The full series is slated for release globally in 2022.
