Screenwest Announces Screen Industry Skills Development Initiatives
Screenwest is pleased to support three fantastic Screen Industry Skills Development Initiatives through its recent funding round.
These include The Art and Craft of Development with Stephen Cleary, hosted by Feisty Dame Productions, the Professional Development Series by Women in Film and Television WA and Kimberley Writers Program – Screen Masterclass Series to be facilitated by Ramu Productions.
The Screen Industry Skills Development Fund is open to not for profit screen industry organisations, established production companies or practitioners with significant experience in the screen industry and a demonstrated commitment to developing the West Australian Screen Industry Sector.
Screenwest Talent Development Manager Eva Di Blasio said, “We are very excited to be supporting a range of diverse skills development opportunities, which will provide a range of practitioners access to the expertise of the country’s leading professionals”.
The fund is designed to provide support to these entities to deliver professional skills development opportunities (i.e. courses, workshops, masterclasses) to Western Australian screen practitioners.
Screen Industry Skills Development Initiative Funding Recipients
Letters of Offer have been issued to the following projects.
The Art and Craft of Development with Stephen Cleary
- Presenter: Stephen Cleary
- Host Company: Feisty Dame Productions
This two-day workshop with international Development Consultant Stephen Cleary is a practical guide to Story Development as an industrial/economic process and a creative undertaking. It examines the development process for scripted drama from a domestic and international perspective, including international co-development.
Areas covered by this workshop include:
- how to write a technical analysis of a story
- working with creative individuals including how to define and respect boundaries
- understanding story structure
- feature film vs TV drama development
- shorts and web series development
- problems commonly associated with adaptation
- designing development budgets
- how your development work fits into a broader industry context

Professional Development Series
- Not for Profit Organisation: Women In Film and Television WA
A series of workshops and professional development events for practitioners working in or wanting to work in the film and television industry.
- Feisty Dames in Film and TV, Leading The Way – a leadership workshop devised to support the advancement of practitioners working in the screen sector by equipping them with practical leadership and entrepreneurial skills.
- WIFT WA present Ladies in Lighting, Gals in Grips – a practical skills development workshop creating opportunities to identify and grow emerging talent in departments that are increasingly difficult to crew in Western Australia and are under represented by female practitioners.
- Contact Officer Training – a skills development workshop focusing on the importance of the Contact Officer role, building an understanding of the role’s responsibilities and equipping practitioners with practical engagement and reporting skills, particularly when dealing with allegations of bullying and discrimination.
Kimberley Writers Program – Screen Masterclass Series
- Company: Ramu Productions
An incubator style program which works with writers at various stages of development.
The core of the Writers program is a 10 – 12 week writing nuts and bolts program, from a range of industry professionals alongside experiential training. The program aims to develop and extend the creative writing skills of the participants and to assist them to keep developing their stories to a level where they can submit their works for commissioning, awards and/or further development opportunities.
The program will include feature film writing, screen adaption and TV series writing. Presenters are yet to be confirmed, but will be leading Australian writers in their field.
