Screenwest announces its new ‘Adaptable’ Initiative, bringing WA books to the screen
Screenwest, in collaboration with Fremantle Press, Magabala Books and Margaret River Press, is excited to announce Adaptable.
This new initiative is designed to increase the number of Western Australian literary stories, particularly those from underrepresented groups and Indigenous writers, being adapted for the screen.
Adaptable kicks off with a ‘Meet the Books’ night on Tuesday, 15 September 2020 at 6:00pm AWST. This Zoom-hosted event will give screenwriters, producers and directors the opportunity to hear a short pitch and participate in a Q&A about each of the books chosen to be part of this new initiative. Copies of all books will be available for interested creatives following the evening. Full guidelines will be available on the Screenwest website the evening of the event.
After the event, creative teams will have the opportunity to create a short, two-page treatment outlining their approach to adapting their chosen book. This treatment is due on 16 November 2020. From these submissions, Screenwest will select up to three teams to receive further development funding for their project.
Participation in ‘Meet the Books’ is the necessary first step to applying for funds under this initiative. You can register for the event on the Screenwest Zoom webinar page.
Screenwest Development and Production Executive Franziska Wagenfeld said, “Adaptations are proven to be highly successful in the marketplace. We are thrilled to be working with such great WA publishers and offering this adaptation opportunity to WA key creatives.”
