Role: Researcher Attachment
Dates: Monday, 9 December 2024 – Friday, 24 January 2025 (seven weeks inclusive of a two week Christmas/New Year hiatus)
Location: Fremantle, WA
Production Company: Smashing Films
Under the expert guidance of Senior Story Producer, Pip Hutchison, the successful candidate will:
- Attend editorial/story meetings.
- Learn about best work practices in production research and how research is used in the scripting process including:
- The fact-checking process;
- How to create and maintain a clear and organized research database.
- Work with the editorial team to help develop the documentary’s structure, ensuring all factual content is woven into the story arc.
- Help to identify key individuals who can provide valuable insights or personal experiences to the relevant subject matter, conduct background research and prepare interview questions.
- Develop the ability to deal with sensitive subjects or story matter.
- Learn how to develop and write a clear and concise research brief.
- Develop strong research skills such as:
- Sourcing and researching facts, figures and information.
- Using the internet to search a variety of subjects including historical and sporting events, figures, and archive databases.
- Gain an understanding of the copyright of archive materials used in documentary film making.
- Research credible sources and archive materials including news stories, historical and sporting events, photographs and official documents, and assess copyright requirements and permissions.
WA First Nations practitioners and WA practitioners from historically underrepresented groups are encouraged to apply.

Key Responsibilities and Requirements
In addition to the requirements in the Screenwest BTL Crew Capacity Program – Applicant Guidelines and Terms of Trade, the successful applicants will possess:
- Excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
- Good attention to detail.
- An interest in storytelling and film production.
- Inquisitive by nature, able to follow instructions.
- Good problem-solving skills and the ability to think outside the box.
- Ability to work collaboratively with team members and contribute ideas.
