Regional WA dramedy ‘Homespun’ now streaming on Stan
Filmed in the Great Southern town of Kojonup, writer/producer/actor Bec Bignell's regional feature follows a dynamic duo determined to change the narrative about life in the bush.
Screenwest is pleased to announce that WA feature Homespun is now available to stream on Stan.
Originally filmed as a web series but streaming as a single, full-length 80 minute version, Homespun is produced and written by Kojonup-raised Bec Bignell, and was filmed in and around the region with a deep level of involvement from the local community.
Set in a thirsty regional town, Homespun follows dynamic duo Georgina “George” McPherson and her best friend Pauline “Paul” Nicholls, who get their big break in a new show about life in the bush. Tired of having to subscribe to an old school vibe, George and Paul propose a refreshed angle about life on the land that relies less on the despair and more on the magic. When their vibrant version is thrown out by a broadcast exec in the big smoke, they decide to take the matter into their own hands and stage a shed show that puts the spotlight on stories from the sticks.
Having lived between Sydney and Kojonup, Bec worked in different sectors of media, film and TV including journalism, partnerships, digital marketing and producing before co-founding production company Cockatoo Co.Lab. Bec also runs a remote creative agency, Rural Room, which represents a nationwide network of creatives from all over regional Australia. In 2017, Bec produced comedy web series 600 Bottles of Wine, which was acquired by Netflix, and she recently served as associate producer on Robert Connolly’s WA family feature Blueback.
“If the stories we tell about ourselves aren’t coming from authentic sources – we are recrafting our social identities from a subset of stereotypes. In Homespun I was excited to give regional people an opportunity to see themselves in the work and be excited by new, modern explorations of their experience. With over 100 people from regional and remote Australia involved the series highlights many new faces and shares many different voices. Homespun is fully loaded – it’s fast paced, visceral, multi-layered, colourful and explores the ideas of hope, resilience, and the cyclical nature of life. It also presents modern day bush feminine figures as vibrant, vivacious characters who are highly visible, adventurous, entrepreneurial and out there doing things – not waiting to be swept off their feet by a cowboy!” said Bec Bignell, Homespun Producer/Writer/Actor.
Homespun is directed by Socratis Otto, best known for his acting roles in Wentworth and Home and Away. Bec and country musician Celeste Clabburn star as George and Paul, respectively, with a dynamic main cast including Heather Mitchell (Upright), Claire van der Boom (Hawaii Five-0), Emily Rose Brennan (The Legend of Gavin Tanner), Bridie Connell (The Moth Effect), George Shevtsov (Love Serenade), and Gungganji Guru Gulu and Yidinji Gimuy Walabara artist Elverina Johnson.
“Bec, Socratis and the team have created a warm, funny project that shines a light on regional WA’s unique characters and spirit. It’s been fantastic to see the local community support and celebrate Homespun; we now look forward to seeing it resonate with audiences nationwide.” said Tenille Kennedy, Screenwest Scripted Executive.
