Where there’s a wool there’s a way! Rams premieres on 29 October 2020!
Cinema releases are baa-ck! Screenwest is excited that Roadshow Films has recently announced it won’t be long until Australian audience can experience the feature starring Sam Neill, Michael Caton and Miranda Richardson!
An English-language adaptation of the successful Icelandic film Hrútar, winner of the 2015 Un Certain Regard Award at Cannes Film Festival, Rams tells the story of two estranged brothers on adjoining sheep farms who haven’t spoken to each other in 40 years. When a rare disease threatens their sheep, the brothers must find a way to work together to save their flock, their small town and their family’s legacy. Far from a ‘remake’, Rams is a fresh interpretation of the original film and will give a universal story a distinctly Australian context.
Filmed in Mount Barker and produced by WBMC, the film showcases some of the region’s stunning rolling paddocks, mountain ranges and epic forests.
One of the most exciting elements of the film is the sets, some of which were completely bespoke designs by WA Production Designer Clayton Jauncey (Last Cab to Darwin) and custom built by local WA crew members.
“We scouted extensively throughout the area in our quest to find the perfect property, but the houses were either not in the right aspect, were surrounded by too many trees, or were in very flat and uninteresting environments,” explained production designer Clayton Jauncey.
“The property that we ultimately chose,” he continued, “had beautiful views across to the Stirling Ranges and a fantastic old house, which, although in complete disrepair when we discovered it, would suit Les perfectly with just a few touch-ups. However, in order to tell the story properly and depict a clear and graphic divide between the two brothers’ lives, we decided that we needed to build a house for Colin.”
Jauncey went to great lengths to physically construct a house for Colin in less than six weeks to accommodate the shooting schedule.
Screenwest CEO Willie Rowe said, “We are absolutely thrilled that Rams is will be released this August. We know audiences will fall in love with the story and the locals of Mount Barker, who were vital to the success of the production will enjoy seeing their town showcased on screen.”
So, don’t be sheepish! Round up your friends and family, support your local cinema and the WA Screen industry and wrangle a ticket to Rams as soon at they go on sale!
