4th PRIDE Queer Film Festival celebrates International Queer Cinema with program release
Over eight days from 4 – 11 March 2020, the festival will feature nine screenings with opening night film SPENCER making its world premiere, a dedicated Australian Queer Shorts Night and incredible LGBTQIA+ stories from around the world.
Screenwest, City of Vincent and Diesel Motors Mercedes Benz in collaboration with The Backlot Perth, are thrilled to host the PRIDE Queer Film Festival from 4 – 11 March 2020.
With support from The Film Collaborative, Film Freeway, and a range of independent film makers, the festival will be screening five feature films and 50 short films. These films will showcase the very best of International Queer Cinema, premiering in Western Australia across seven days of the festival, with proceeds going to PRIDE WA.
In the development of the festival program, Film Festival Artistic Director, Mark Reid wanted to offer Perth audiences, films that were thought provoking, emotional, funny and captivating.
“I didn’t want to put films in the festival that were ‘happy-ever-after-films’. These films from all over the world need to push the boundaries, show the depth of filmmaking and have a strong queer narrative that show the lived experience that is still happening out there,” Reid explains.
Each night of the festival will feature a range of short films from around the world, that add depth and experience to the program, and expand the narrative that can be told about LGBTQIA+ experiences in 2020.
Program highlights include Adam Noviello the star, co-author and producer of the opening night film SPENCER, flying into Perth for the world premiere. Taking time out from his role in the Australian production of CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY, Noviello will host a Q&A with the audience after the screening, talking about the production of SPENCER and the importance of diverse cinema. SPENCER will be complimented by the short Australian films TRIBUNAL, a home-grown WA film, and YES!
With such a strong collection of short films submitted this year the festival found it difficult to shortlist so have introduced four short film sessions. These will feature some of the best short queer films from around the world including the USA, Canada, the UK, Netherlands, France, Mexico, Russian Federation, China, Czech Republic, Italy, Brazil and Turkey, with all of the feature films premiering in Perth.
“The rich depth of films that were submitted for inclusion this year, were incredible and made the job of putting the festival program together really hard. I wanted to make sure that we were able to give representation to different queer narratives and stories, that ask us all to think, feel and understand the different lived experiences,” Reid said.
This year, a record-breaking number of amazing shorts from Australia were submitted to the festival, so a new event was created to feature exclusively Australian short films.
Screenwest is proud to support the PRIDE Queer Film Festival through our Audience Community Engagement Fund to continue to celebrate diverse screen culture and stories with Western Australians.
