First Nations Western Australian documentary series ‘Our Medicine’ coming to NITV and SBS in 2025
Produced by Karla Hart and Periscope Pictures' Sam Field, Our Medicine follows First Nations professionals working on the medical frontline as they try to achieve better health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients and communities.
Screenwest is pleased to announce brand new Western Australian documentary series, Our Medicine will screen on NITV, SBS and SBS On Demand in 2025, as announced by the broadcaster at their upfronts event last week.
Narrated by leading First Nations actor and filmmaker Leah Purcell (High Country, The Drover’s Wife: The Legend of Molly Johnson), Our Medicine is a groundbreaking six-part observational series which takes viewers behind the frontline of our strained medical services and joins patients on their emotional journeys through the system.
Alongside incredible access to some of the oldest traditional healing practices in the world, the series tracks the day-to-day challenges of medical professionals working in some of the busiest hospitals and jurisdictions in Australia.
Our Medicine shines an important light on First Nations professionals and communities taking control of Indigenous health.
Our Medicine is produced by Karla Hart (Yokayi Footy, Family Rules) and Periscope Pictures’ Sam Field, and co-directed by Karla alongside Broome-based filmmaker Kimberley Benjamin (upcoming series Warm Props).
The series serves as a follow-up to Periscope and Pink Pepper’s groundbreaking 2021 documentary and 2023 series Our Law, which explored the relationship between police and First Nations peoples. Both seasons of Our Law are currently available to stream on SBS On Demand here.
Our Medicine will premiere on NITV, SBS and SBS On Demand in 2025.
Production credit: Our Medicine is a Karla Hart Enterprises and Periscope Pictures production for NITV. Principal production funding from Screen Australia’s First Nations Department and NITV. Financed with support from Screenwest, Lotterywest and the WA Regional Screen Fund.
