NAIDOC Week Screenings & Events
Western Australia is celebrating National NAIDOC Week 2019 with a series of special events and screenings from Sunday, 7 July to Sunday, 14 July 2019.
NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia each July to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
In recognition of the 2019 theme Voice. Treaty. Truth. we have collected some event highlights, including screenings of films and projects made by Indigenous creators, with meaningful consultation, collaboration and consent with the story owners.

KGB on ABC Comedy and iview
- Sunday, 7 July 2019 on ABC iview
- Monday, 8 July – Friday, 12 July 2019 nightly on ABC Comedy after BLACK COMEDY
Set in Perth’s notorious KGB (Koondoola, Girrawheen, Balga), the series follows two rookie detectives, tough guy Jack and gentle giant Nigel, as they deal with the chaos of their new jobs, no-nonsense boss, work rivals, drug dealers and suspects who consistently turn out to be family.

A young Aboriginal man, Jarman, is tasked with protecting his younger disabled brother from life in a harsh remote community. His father, Thunder, wants him to become the leader of the tribe and mocks any weakness in him.

One of Australia’s leading filmmakers, Warwick Thornton, tackles the subject of the Southern Cross head-on in this bold, poetic essay-film. WE DON’T NEED A MAP asks questions about where the Southern Cross sits in the Australian psyche. Imbued with Warwick’s cavalier spirit, this is a fun and thought-provoking ride through Australia’s cultural and political landscape.

THE DREAMING is an award-winning animation series recommended by educational institutions throughout Australia
Unique, authentic and diverse, these animated films are based on Australian Aboriginal oral histories and storytelling that have been maintained as a body of knowledge for over 40,000 years.
Throughout NAIDOC Week, these animations will be played daily in the library, creating a space for children and adults alike to drop by and learn some of the fascinating stories of the Dreamtime.
Yagan Square Digital Tower NAIDOC Exhibitions

Yagan Square Digital Tower is celebrating NAIDOC week with a series of exhibitions, screenings and commissioned work created by Indigenous creatives. Featured pieces include:
- An exhibition of paintings by Tjyllyungoo (Lance Chadd), the artist behind the giant Wirin statue in Yagan Square
- An animation by students from Narrogin Primary and Senior High School based on the Noongar Dreamtime story of Charrnock Woman
- A series of paintings made by the students from Flinders Park Primary School in Albany after they learned about the Noongar calendar
- An animation showcase from DADAA, produced from artwork by Desmond Woodley and Patrick Carter.

About NAIDOC Week
NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia each July to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
NAIDOC stands for National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee. Its origins can be traced to the emergence of Aboriginal groups in the 1920′s which sought to increase awareness in the wider community of the status and treatment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians.
NAIDOC is celebrated not only in Indigenous communities, but by Australians from all walks of life. The week is a great opportunity to participate in a range of activities and to support your local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community.
The 2019 theme is Voice. Treaty. Truth. in honour of 2019 being celebrated as the United Nations International Year of Indigenous Languages.
Voice. Treaty. Truth. refers to the three key elements of reforms set out in the Uluru Statement from the Heart and represents the unified position of First Nations Australians.
