‘Filming our Future’ trailer drops today
The 15-part disability-led short documentary series will make its world premiere on YouTube next Wednesday, 23 February.
Screenwest and Carers WA are excited to announce Filming our Future, the 15-part disability-led short documentary series produced by Joined Up Films, will make its world premiere on YouTube next Wednesday, 23 February.
The series, which follows 19 storytellers who live with a disability or care for someone that does, explores the way sports and physical activities can drive inclusion and community cohesion.
The storytellers shed light on their experiences with their respective community sporting clubs; discussing how physical activity and inclusion have provided opportunities for forging friendships, improving health and learning new skills in fun and supportive environments.
The community sporting clubs featured include the Swan Districts Football Club, Subiaco’s Peak Trampoline, exercise physiologists Range of Motion, SouthWest Judo Academy in Rockingham and Star Blasters Cricket in Kingsley.

Filming Our Future is executive produced by Dan Brown of factual production company Joined Up Films, whose work incorporates a strong social conscience and aims to challenge stigmas, including Is Australia Racist?, What Does Australia Really Think About and most recently The Truth About Anxiety with Celia Pacquola, which premiered on SBS in October.
Joined Up assembled a crew of WA screen industry professionals to work alongside emerging disability diverse filmmakers Rachel Fitzgerald, Kaisher Moi, Ivica Lendich and Patricia Alessi, who came on board as crew attachments to develop their skills across writing, directing, cinematography, editing and sound and grow their career potential in the industry.
Filming Our Future is the second annual disability-led initiative created by Screenwest and Carers WA, following the success of Different Lens, the 12-part disability-led series produced by Rhythm Content in 2020. Both initiatives were designed to offer screen skills development opportunities for Western Australian disability diverse screen practitioners, produce local disability-led content, build capacity within the local screen sector to be more inclusive and promote visibility of disability diverse onscreen talent.
“Working on the Different Lens project gave us an insight into the power of media to reach community and make a difference in people’s lives. We thought it was really important to keep that momentum going with Screenwest and so the Filming our Future project came about. It was absolutely fantastic to have the opportunity to work alongside such a talented and diverse group of sportspeople and I think the results speak for themselves!” said Paul Rogers, Carers WA Business Development and Disability Service Manager.
“The opportunity to hear new voices and see people living with disability engaging in sport on screen is extremely important in terms of representation. It’s such a privilege to be shepherding diverse content with fantastic collaborators.” said Dr. Jonathan Messer, Screenwest Diversity and Inclusion Manager.
Filming our Future will be available to stream on Carers WA’s YouTube channel from Wednesday, 23 February 2022.
