Facing Monsters To Hold One Night Only Advance Screening
Following a sold-out screening at CinefestOZ in August, WA feature documentary, Facing Monsters, is set to hold a one-night-only Advance Screening.
WA feature documentary, Facing Monsters, is set to hold an exclusive Advance Screening at Luna Cinemas Leederville on Saturday 16 October, ahead of its official release in 2022.
Facing Monsters digs deep into the psyche of enigmatic West Australian ‘slab wave’ surfer Kerby Brown, a man whose connection with the ocean runs as deep as his love for his family. More than just a surfing story, the audience joins Kerby and his family on his quest to ride a ferocious slab wave in the deep Southern Ocean that no one on the planet has surfed before. It’s a film about fear, addictions, and family bonds, exploring what drives Kerby, what anchors him and why he’s obsessed with pitting himself against one of nature’s most intimidating forces.
Directed by Bentley Dean (Contact, Tanna) and produced by WA’s Chris Veerhuis (Red Dog: True Blue, Breath) along with executive producers Frank Chidiac, Susanne Morrison and co-producer Sonya Rifici, this suspenseful, action-packed drama unravels Kerby’s inner demons whilst confronting the real-world consequences that his death-defying passion could have on his family.
“What made this project special was witnessing up-close Kerby’s sublime surfing. There’s no way you can describe what he does as anything else but art. Just as special were the places he created his art – coastlines of desert meeting the sea, giant granite islands, waters teeming with whales, dolphins and sharks.” said Bentley Dean, Director.
The event will feature a live post-screening Q&A with Kerby, his brother Cortney and Director of Photography Rick Rifici (Breath, upcoming film Blueback).
“The Facing Monsters team are super excited to present this Advanced Screening of the film and to introduce Kerby Brown via an intimate post showing Q&A. Coming off the back of two sold out shows at CinefestOZ and lots of interest in the film we now embark on a limited number of selected events around WA, prior to the film’s release early next year. I am especially pleased that Kerby’s personal story has resonated so strongly with a wide range of audiences and that our state’s amazing coastline is so stunningly presented.” said Chris Veerhuis, Producer.
Facing Monsters was filmed in some of WA’s most famous and unpredictable surfing locations, including in and around the Mid West, Great Southern and Southern Ocean regions.
“We’re thrilled that Perth audiences have been given the opportunity to catch a special screening of this powerful West Australian story. Facing Monsters isn’t just a documentary for surfers – I encourage everyone to come and experience in Kerby’s immersive, rewarding journey.” said Rikki Lea Bestall, Screenwest CEO.
The Facing Monsters Advance Screening is taking place at 6:30pm on Saturday 16 October. Tickets are available through the Luna Palace Cinemas website here.
