Expressions of Interest open for a spot in AFTRS Assistant Director Fundamentals course
Screenwest and AFTRS are pleased to offer one WA screen practitioner a complimentary spot in the upcoming Perth AFTRS Assistant Director Fundamentals course, which will provide practitioners with an understanding of Assistant Directing and the opportunity to meet other industry professionals. Screenwest and AFTRS are pleased to offer one WA practitioner a complimentary spot in the AFTRS Assistant Director Fundamentals course, taking place in Perth in July 2024. The course will provide practitioners with an understanding of Assistant Directing and the opportunity to meet other industry professionals.
The course will run over two days from 20 – 21 July 2024. The workshop will take place in Mount Lawley WA, with travel and accommodation assistance available for regional applicants.
Assistant Director Fundamentals is designed for screen practitioners with some on-set or production office experience, with a view to eventually being a Director, Producer or First AD in TV or film. The course will include:
- An understanding of the role of 1st AD, including breaking down and scheduling a film, and coordinating a set.
- An introduction & demo of Movie Magic scheduling software.
- The different responsibilities of the 2nd AD and 3rd AD, covering pre-production and production responsibilities, including managing actors, liaising with all departments, information dissemination, resource efficiency, workflow management, and OH&S.
- The challenges of coordinating a film set and the nitty-gritty, day-to-day stuff you need to know to be a great 2nd or 3rd AD.

Eligibility
Applicants must:
- Be a Western Australian resident and meet the general eligibility requirements in the Screenwest Terms of Trade.
- Have a genuine and demonstrated interest in pursuing a career as an Assistant Director
- Practitioners interested in a career as a Producer or Director will also be considered.
WA First Nations practitioners and WA practitioners from historically underrepresented groups are encouraged to apply.

- Expression of Interest (EOI) – 500 words maximum. Your EOI should address why you wish to attend the course, identifying the professional outcomes you wish to achieve and how it will assist with your career development.
- Current CV – 2 pages maximum.
Applications will be assessed based on the strength of the EOI, suitability to the workshop and identified outcomes to be achieved.
