Dr. Jonathan Messer joins Screenwest as Diversity and Inclusion Manager

Screenwest is excited to welcome Dr. Jonathan Messer as Diversity and Inclusion Manager at Screenwest, with support from Carers WA.
As Diversity and Inclusion Manager, Jonathan will be responsible for the delivery and day-to-day management of diversity related activities and initiatives, driving Diversity, Equity and Inclusion for the benefit of the Western Australian screen industry and wider community.
The part-time role has been made possible through the support of Carers WA, to facilitate the development and delivery of a Disability Diverse Initiative, called Our Choice, Our Voice, Our Future, which will be announced when Jonathan commences at Screenwest.
“Jonathan has been a valued member of Screenwest’s Diversity Leadership group and has significant connections with the diverse communities within the Western Australian Screen Industry and wider population. We look forward to working with him to make our screen industry inclusive and have people from a variety of diverse backgrounds represented in front of and behind the camera,” explained Wille Rowe, CEO of Screenwest.
Jonathan said, “Screenwest has a rich history of supporting unique Australian stories, and has again been a world-leader by creating this exciting role. I’m thrilled to be assisting with the ongoing engagement of diverse screen practitioner’s in as many ways as possible. It’s a sensational time to be a part of both cultural change and dynamic growth in the screen industry here in WA.”
Jonathan will commence his role with Screenwest on Monday, 18 January 2021.
About Dr. Jonathan Messer
Dr. Jonathan Messer is an established creative producer and director of film and theatre and holds a PhD in Philosophy from the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts. Jonathan identifies as a member of the LGBTQIA+ community and has lived experience of disability.
He is a graduate director from both the American Film Institute in Los Angeles and the National Institute of Dramatic Art in Sydney. He produced and directed the award-winning feature length documentary, It’s Not Just Me, about four transgender men in Perth, Western Australia, which had its international premiere at the Revelation Perth International Film Festival.
He has worked in the USA and UK for companies such as the Kennedy Marshall Company (The Bourne Supremacy, Seabiscuit) and the BBC (Absolutely Fabulous, Top of the Pops, Blue Peter, Later with Jools). He is also a Justice of the Peace in Western Australia.
