WA company Double Barrel VFX has completed visual effects work on recently released feature film DUMPLIN’.
The film stars Jennifer Aniston and Australian actress Danielle Macdonald with music by Dolly Parton. DUMPLIN’ is available to stream on Netflix Australia now.
DUMPLIN’ tells the story of Willowdean (Dumplin’), the plus-size teenage daughter of a former beauty queen, who signs up for her mum’s Miss Teen Bluebonnet pageant as a protest.
It soon escalates when other contestants follow her footsteps, revolutionising the pageant and their small Texas town.
Double Barrel VFX is headed by Nathan Stone and Stuart Campbell. Nathan and Stuart both studied film in Perth before working in animation overseas and in the eastern states, respectively.
“We completed a variety of shots on DUMPLIN’, including crew removals, split-screens and 3D set additions to enhance locations.” said Campbell. “It was a pleasure working with the post team in LA and the time difference works nicely for turning around shots.”
“There is some amazing post and VFX talent in Perth. The challenge is attracting a consistent amount of high-end work to keep them here and continue growing the industry.”
Over the years, Double Barrel has worked on a number of local shorts, TV series and films, including WASTED ON THE YOUNG and THESE FINAL HOURS.
In 2017, they completed 260 VFX shots on Nash Edgerton’s feature film GRINGO for Amazon Studios and worked with online learning company Masterclass on its Ron Howard series, completing over 400 shots.
2018 has been busy with three feature projects, including Anthony Maras’ upcoming HOTEL MUMBAI, which premiered recently at TIFF and the Adelaide Film Festival.
