Diversity Leadership Group welcomes Tony Sarre
Legally blind filmmaker Tony Sarre is re-engaging with the world of filmmaking with support from DADAA, NDIS, Screenwest and the Diversity Leadership Group.
After giving up filmmaking at university in 2002 due to a major loss of vision as a result of Retinitis Pigmentosa, Tony Sarre now only has light perception.
His passion for filmmaking remained and in 2018 Tony returned to his filmmaking pursuits with DADAA before completing Screenwest’s eight-week Concept to Story Development Lab with Ross Grayson Bell and participating in the AFTRS, Screenwest and DADAA INITIATE workshop.
Tony’s aim is to tell screen stories from a disabled point of view, with a focus on living with blindness. He says that screen practitioners who are disability diverse should have agency, power and control over their lives and how they tell their stories.
In 2018, Tony made WORKING DOG which is the first in this series of short films and looks at the relationship between a blind person and their Seeing Eye Dog.
He is currently writing a short film based on his own experience of hitchhiking across the Nullabor as a teenager with 3% vision and is also making short films and writing a DOG BLOG about life with his Seeing Eye Dog, Paddington.
Tony is excited to be part of the WA Screen Diversity Leadership Group and is eager to contribute his unique perspective to the screen diversity diaspora through the WA Screen Diversity Roadmap and Screenwest’s Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Plan.
