Curious Australia Initiative Closing Soon
Curious Australia is a documentary production fund, seeking to highlight diversity in any sector.
Applications close on the 9th of August
Curious Australia is a joint production fund, made possible by the union of SBS, NITV, Screen Australia, Screenwest, Screen NSW, Film Victoria, Screen Tasmania, South Australian Film Corp, Screen Territory and Screen Queensland.
The fund is to produce documentary content, with a strong focus on supporting practitioners from underrepresented backgrounds with ideas that reflect equity and diversity from a unique standpoint.
The initiative is seeking unique perspectives to shine a light on these diverse sectors, with the possibility of up to 13 documentaries to be commissioned. It is unlikely that more than one film about a specific topic will be selected, so pitches must be unique and speak clearly to the film, and not just the topic or issue. The documentaries must be stand alone, half an hour programs that reflect the diversity of people and experiences in contemporary Australia, presented in an innovative manner to fit with SBS’s charter.
Applications are open to any theme, style, or form, but the initiatives focus is on diverse and First Nations creatives. The purpose is primarily the amplification of underrepresented storytellers, and projects will be judged on:
- Creative strength
- Audience relevance
- The standard of creative deliverables
- The track record of key team members, and the project’s ability to further develop skills
- The project’s alignment with the diversity and inclusivity aims of the initiative
- The project’s suitability within the SBS Charter, Codes of Practice and Editorial Guidelines
The fund closes next Monday, on the 9th of August. Applications are to be submitted through Screenwest’s Smarty Grants page.
