Twenty-eight local governments have participated in Screenwest’s free Film Friendly Western Australia workshops, effectively opening their doors as destinations for local screen production.
The workshops are the first stage in the Film Friendly certification program, which helps councils and shires work with filmmakers, promote their locations and prepare for incoming film and television productions.
“We have had overwhelming interest in our Film Friendly Western Australia program since it was launched in February, with councils keen to shine a spotlight on some special parts of WA,” said Gabrielle Cole, Screenwest Production Attraction and Services Manager.
“History has shown that production on location provides a real economic boost, particularly in regional towns, and demand for more production in WA is only going to increase with the opening of the Perth Film Studios in 2026.
“This program is all about arming councils and shires with the skills and know-how to best attract screen production to their areas.”
WA already has five “certified” film friendly communities including the City of Albany, City of Busselton, City of Bunbury, Shire of West Arthur and Shire of Shark Bay.
