Screenwest is launching the inaugural Concept to Story Development Lab. The Lab runs for eight weeks beginning on Monday, 15 October 2018.*
This is the first in an integrated suite of Industry Skills and Development initiatives to be rolled out by the Screenwest Development and Production team over the coming months.
About the Concept to Story Development Lab
The Concept to Story Development Lab is a free eight-week practical workshop.
The Lab is open to all storytellers, from documentary producers and directors, to writers and novelists; anyone with a story to tell.
The workshops will be run by Screenwest’s Scripted Executive Ross Grayson Bell, producer of FIGHT CLUB starring Brad Pitt and Edward Norton.
Ross has more than 25 years’ international experience in story development and screenwriting, and was the Head of Screenwriting at the Australian Film, Television and Radio School (AFTRS) from 2009 to 2014.
What to expect
The first hour of each session will be spent engaging with the fundamental principles of storytelling; concept, genre, premise, structure and character.
The second hour will focus on applying a rigorous development process to the ideas the participants have brought to the workshop.
The goal at the end of eight weeks is for the workshop participants to leave with a one-page synopsis and logline that succinctly captures the dramatic through line of their story; whether the story be for a feature film, web-series, factual TV series or graphic novel.
These story outlines can then be developed further in the next Screenwest Development Initiative (still to be announced) slated for early next year. Subscribe to the Screenwest newsletter to be informed when the next round opens.
How to Register
The Story Lab is free, places are strictly limited and will run out quickly.
Grab a ticket through the Concept to Story Development Lab Eventbrite Page before they run out!
Requirements
Please note that The Story Lab is an eight-week program and each session will build on the work completed in the previous session.
As such, it is essential you must be available for all eight sessions, turn up on time and stay for the duration of the session.
You also need to be willing to workshop your ideas while remaining open to feedback.
Our goal as storytellers is to engage an audience; the other participants in the workshop will be your first audience, or even your future colleagues!
We look forward to welcoming you to an inclusive, development workshop with the sole purpose of getting your story ideas market ready.

WA Screen Industry Development Opportunities
The Concept to Story Development Lab is designed to dovetail into programs funded through Screenwest’s Screen Industry Skills Development Fund.
These initiatives will support a wide range of WA storytellers to create better-informed pathways to possible funding opportunities, both at Screenwest and the broader industry.
By engaging with industry from the outset, we will bring a new market-place focus to these initiatives and invite commissioning editors, distributors and TV executives to take part, either via video conference or in person. Our aim is to better connect local practitioners with the market place for those essential attachments needed when applying for funding.
As part of the market-place focus of the initiative, Screenwest is hosting Colin Thrupp from Screentime SA on Tuesday, October 16 2018.
Subscribe to the Screenwest newsletter and follow us on Facebook to be the first to hear when new programs launch.
