Applications Open for travel to the New Zealand Power of Inclusion Summit
Screenwest has opened applications for travel assistance to the Power of Inclusion Summit in New Zealand from 3 – 4 October 2019. Applications close Friday, 13 September 2019 at 5:00pm AWST.
Screenwest will be supporting up to 4 early to midcareer practitioners to travel to attend the two-day conference in Auckland New Zealand.
Power of Inclusion Summit
Hosted by the New Zealand Film Commission and Women in Film and Television International with support from The Walt Disney Studios, The Power of Inclusion presents a 2-day programme including case studies, panels, conversations and keynotes on pertinent issues in the inclusion and representation space.
The conference brings people together, presenting a myriad of world views, positing future action to create a more inclusive industry and world, all enveloped in the special environment that Aotearoa New Zealand and its peoples have to offer.
The programme features over 35 speakers from around the world, and will include:
- writers, directors and producers making ground breaking work
- activists, founders, executives and researchers from companies and initiatives leading the way in inclusion
- top tier US studio and SVOD executives, and
- leading practitioners from Aotearoa New Zealand.
The line-up will include people of colour, women, inter-faith, indigenous, LGBTQIA+ and differently-abled people.
Recently announced speakers include:
- Yara Shahidi is an actress and activist, best known for her breakout role in the TV series BLACK-ISH and the spinoff GROWN-ISH, while empowering a generation of activism through her advocacy with Eighteen X 18 and Yara’s Club
- Heather Rae is a film and television producer (Oscar nominated FROZEN RIVER), has an overall producing deal with Amazon Studios and works with narrative change organisation IllumiNative to foster accurate and authentic representation of Native and Indigenous people
- Rachel House (Ngāi Tahu, Ngāti Mutunga) is an actor and director, celebrated for her roles in WHALE RIDER, THOR: RAGNAROK, HUNT FOR THE WILDERPEOPLE and MOANA and for her work as a director in both theatre and screen
- Oscar Kightley is a Samoan born writer, actor and director who grew up in New Zealand and has created critically acclaimed award-winning work for the stage, small and big screens including acting roles in HUNT FOR THE WILDERPEOPLE, MOANA and SIONE’S WEDDING which he co-wrote
- Heperi Mita (Ngāti Pikiao) is director of the acclaimed documentary MERATA: HOW MUM DECOLONISED THE SCREEN, an intimate portrait of New Zealand filmmaking icon, international champion of indigenous cinema and his mother, Merata Mita

How to Apply for Travel Funding
The full guidelines, application materials and eligibility criteria are available on the Travel Assistance for the New Zealand Power of Inclusion Summit page of the Screenwest website.
All program guidelines are to be read in conjunction with the Screenwest Terms of Trade.
An application receipt will be forwarded to the applicant within two working days to confirm that Screenwest has received the application. It is the applicant’s responsibility to contact Screenwest if an application receipt has not been received within this timeframe.
Applications close Friday, 13 September 2019 at 5:00pm AWST.
