Yagan Square Digital Tower will host the premiere of the BECAUSE OF HER WE CAN digital portrait exhibition on Monday, 9 July at 12:00pm.
Community Arts Network (CAN) has partnered with Camera Story to create a digital exhibition of portrait photographs to elevate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women who have inspired their communities, in honour of the 2018 NAIDOC Theme BECAUSE OF HER WE CAN.
CAN issued a call out on social media that asked for people to share their stories of Indigenous women who have inspired them and invited them to Yagan Square for a portrait shoot.
Community Arts Network Partnerships and Media Manager Michelle White said the shoot was incredibly popular with over a hundred people showing up to have their photo taken.
“As soon as I heard the theme for this year’s NAIDOC I knew I wanted to do a project that would honour strong, selfless and stoic Aboriginal women who have led the way for us and future generations,” said Ms White.
“My nanas and mum have passed on, so it was a deeply personal journey for me. I’ve been humbled by the response we’ve had from the community and the photographers from Camera Story have perfectly captured the essence of each of our BECAUSE OF HER heroes. I can’t wait to see their faces light up the City of Perth.”
The premiere of BECAUSE OF HER WE CAN is a free event and open to everyone.
Guests will be treated to exclusive entertainment by the talented Middar Yorgras Dance Group, alongside a special live performance by singer Natasha Eldridge who has written an original song inspired by this year’s NAIDOC theme.
