To uncover, inspire and develop the career of Western Australian filmmakers, Screenwest will once again invest $750,000 into one low budget feature film through the West Coast Visions initiative in 2018. Applications close 5.00pm Monday, 26 March 2018.
West Coast Visions seeks applications from filmmaking teams with well-developed low-budget feature film projects and a distinctive and marketable story, which is intended to be shot in Western Australia within a year.
West Coast Visions plays a pivotal role in launching WA filmmaking careers, most recently HOUNDS OF LOVE (written and directed by Ben Young and produced by Melissa Kelly at Factor 30), which was nominated for 9 2017 AFI/ AACTA Awards, with Emma Booth taking home Best Lead Actress. Ben Young was nominated for an AFI/ AACTA for Best Direction and took home the Best Director Award at Brussel International Film Festival.
Maziar Lahooti’s BELOW was the 2017 West Coast Visions recipient and is being produced by Kate Neylon with Madman Productions.
To be eligible to apply, it must be the first time for at least one of the Western Australian key creatives from the team (producer, director, writer) to be credited in this position on a feature film.
The assessment process includes review of other heads of department, with a points system to ensure Western Australians are provided opportunities to further their careers. The applicant must demonstrate firm evidence of how the balance of funding and investment will be raised, and clearly identify the audience/market potential. High-level industry professionals join Screenwest in the two-stage decision-making process, which is expected to be made by 30 June 2018.
