Synopsis

Blueback is a feature film adaptation of Tim Winton’s best-selling and critically acclaimed novella. A fable for all ages, it is a beautiful story set on an idyllic stretch of West Australian coast where the waters teem with fish, and a child and her mother live a simple, tough existence.

Marine biologist Abby (Mia Wasikowska) returns to the bay of her childhood after the news of her mother Dora’s stroke. Looking after her ill mother, Abby begins to remind Dora (Liz Alexander) of the stories of the life they shared when Abby was a young child (Ariel Donoghue) and a teenager (Ilsa Fogg).

In an effort to rouse Dora, Abby recalls the time she met Blueback, a wild blue groper. With the threat of poachers and environmental destruction, Abby and Dora (Radha Mitchell) work courageously to protect the natural world and its creatures, with Abby putting herself in danger to save Blueback.
