Shock Art, the second of the two Western Australian productions commissioned by the ABC under the inaugural Art Bites initiative, is available on ABC Arts iView from Wednesday, 15 March.
Posing the question if shocking art has the power to change the world or if artists are simply going too far, Shock Art is an intriguing foray into the weird, the gross and divisive. The 6 x 10 minute series is a ‘can’t look / can’t look away’ exploration of what shocks us today, ultimately painting a vivid picture about the strong taboos at-large in Australian society.
In each episode, art historian Dr Christina Chau visits with two esteemed Australian artists to experience their works featuring extreme mediums which are pushing their audience’s limits, challenging convention and enraging the public.
Director and writer Sam Bodhi Field said, “the series sets out to explore the topic from a variety of very different perspectives: from Christina’s, from that of a cross section of Australian audiences, from the point of view of both Art curators and the ‘man on the street’, and ultimately from the perspective of the artists themselves.”
Shock Art is a Periscope Pictures production, written & directed by Sam Bodhi Field, produced by Alice Ross and executive produced by Mandy Chang.
