Spirit Stones a finalist at the Dendy Awards
Western Australian documentary Spirit Stones has been selected as a finalist in the prestigious Dendy Awards for Australian Short Films.
An all-important stepping stone (pardon the pun in this film's case!) in the careers of many filmmakers, the Dendy Awards are presented by the Sydney Film Festival in recognition of the best of Australian short filmmaking. The Awards have launched many a film career and are a key event in the Australian film calendar.
Spirit Stones is a beautifully filmed documentary set in south-west WA. It tells of the phenomenal events that occurred in the 1940s and 1950s when stones fell on Aboriginal (Noongar) camps. These "showers" delivered stones in locations up to 250 kilometres apart, falling at various places for hours, sometimes days and even weeks and months. Through intimate storytelling the witnesses reignite their memories and recreate these very strange and sometimes scary events.
Spirit Stones is directed by Allan Collins and produced by Jennifer Gherardi and supported by ScreenWest and Lotterywest.
The 2008 Dendy Awards for Australian Short Film will take place in Sydney on June 13.
