Raw Nerve films in running for prizes at Margaret River

26 March 2008

Two Western Australian shorts produced through the ‘Raw Nerve' initiative are in the running to be named Best Film at this weekend's Margaret River Shorts.

Selling Hopkins and Clouds are among the final 12 films at the annual festival which will be held at the Margaret River Cultural Centre on March 29 and 30.

Both were funded through ‘Raw Nerve', an Australian Film Commission (AFC) and Film and Television Institute (FTI) initiative which aims to provide first time filmmakers with an opportunity to showcase their filmic storytelling ability.

Selling Hopkins is a quirky ‘dramedy' about the emerging friendship between an awkward unemployed man (Jeremy Malcolm) and a lonely saleswoman (Michelle Francis).  The film was produced, written and directed by Scott Eathorne.

Clouds explores how our memories affect us through Timothy, a young boy who recounts his experience of being lost in the bush and using his vivid imagination to help him to safety.  Clouds was written and directed by Will Faulkner and produced by Annabelle Fouchard.

Margaret River Shorts is an international short film festival with a south-west WA regional focus.  Other Western Australian shorts vying for a slice of the $5000 prize pool are:

  • The Big Issue Project by Joey George
  • Just Commit by Joti Luciano
  • Margaret River Surf DV by Steve Dewell
  • Apple Ave by Melissa Lowe
  • Cullen Wines Turns Green by Peter Paton
  • One Way Street by Russell Morris
