Number 1 Cloudstreet comes to life

The script called for a "Flaking two-storey timber mansion with rusting iron lace and lifting weatherboards that hang like scabs in a garden gone to ruin and far beyond."  The custom-made building is now pride of place on the Cloudstreet set.

With West Australian production designer Herbert Pinter (Mao's Last Dancer) at the helm, number 1 Cloudstreet, home to the Lamb and Pickles' families, and the adjoining streetscape was built in just eight weeks.

Premier Colin Barnett and Minister John Day last week visited the Cloudstreet set, escorted by Showtime CEO, Peter Rose and executive producers, Kim Vecera, Des Monaghan, Bob Campbell, and producers Greg Haddrick and Brenda Pam - who were all on hand to show the impressive set up close, and see one of the scenes being filmed.

"Cloudstreet is a classic Australian novel by an award-winning West Australian writer and I am delighted the Government is supporting this much-anticipated project," Mr Day said.

"This project not only allows us to showcase the amazing talent that exists in the film and television industry here in WA, but also provides a significant economic boost to the State."

The Government's funding for the project was through ScreenWest's Production Attraction Fund, which aims to attract high-profile interstate and international screen productions to WA.

"We have seen today that this is a high-quality production with an amazing cast and crew and equally impressive set," the Minister said.

"It is fantastic that 90 out of the 105 crew are West Australians and more than 100 local actors have a role in the production, as well as many extras.

Written by Tim Winton and Ellen Fontana, the 6-hour television series is being produced by Screentime for Showtime Australia.

The miniseries features a distinguished Australian cast including Essie Davis (Australia, The Matrix Revolutions), Stephen Curry (:30 Seconds, The King), Emma Booth (Underbelly: The Golden Mile), Geoff Morrell (Bed of Roses, Sea Patrol) and Kerry Fox (Bright Star).

Cloudstreet will premiere in 2011 exclusively on showcase available on Foxtel and Austar.
