‘Red Dog’ wins Best Film at the AACTA Awards

01 February 2012
Box office success story Red Dog has continued its extraordinary run at the inaugural Samsung AACTA Awards, taking home the award for Best Film on Tuesday night after receiving the AFI Member's Choice Award at an earlier ceremony. Cloudstreet rising star, Lara Robinson also received the Award for Best Young Actor for her performance as young Rose Pickles in the acclaimed three part television series shot on location in Perth.

WA's film and television industry continues to grow with these major awards adding to an impressive array of accolades. Awards for documentaries' Jandamarra's War, SAS: The Search for Warriors and WA production designer Herbert Pinter contribute to a total of six AACTA Awards for the State.

Culture and the Arts Minister John Day said this has been a landmark year for WA's screen industry and State Government-supported productions, with local productions receiving a total of 29 AACTA Award nominations.

"The sheer number and diversity of nominations is proof that Western Australian productions are of a high quality and that there is increasing depth in the local screen industry," Mr Day said.

"Overall, nominations were received in three of the four major AACTA Award categories, including feature film, television, and documentary and it is pleasing to note that ScreenWest-supported productions had wins in each of these categories.

"This is an outstanding achievement and testimony to the talent and skill that is available in Western Australia.

"WA-made feature films continue to garner worldwide support and recognition and the Liberal-National Government will continue to support and nurture our local screen practitioners."

The AACTA Awards replace the annual Australian Film Institute Awards. They bring together practitioners from a broad range of crafts to be recognised and awarded for outstanding contribution to the Australian film, television, documentary and shorts production industries.

Hoping to continue its success on the international stage, Red Dog will be released in UK cinemas on 24 February.
